Ali assisted on productions in Minneapolis at Theatre de la Jeune Lune and Wintertime at the Guthrie Theater in 2003. Ali was assistant director on several productions in Boston, including Commonwealth Shakespeare Company (CSC) Shakespeare's Henry Vin 2002 and Macbeth in 2003. He assisted on the operas Powder Her Face in 2003 and Angels in America in 2006 for Opera Boston. He also assisted on The Miser for American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in 2004.

On Broadway, his designs for both Hadestown and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 earned Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards, as well as a Live Design Achievement of the Year. His collaborations with the Tony award-winning director Rachel Chavkin include Hadestown (The Citadel, NYTW; Drama Desk Nom.), Lempicka (Williamstown), The Royal Family (The Guthrie), Preludes (LCT3), The Fairytale Lives of Russian Girls (Yale Rep), and Uncle Vanya (CSC).

Originally from Rochester New York, currently resides in Los Angeles working primarily as a sound designer and composer. He attended the University of the Arts receiving a BFA and later studied the Jacque Lecoq approach to avant-garde theatre at the London International School of Performing Arts. Mikaal also writes and directs from time to time. He is currently writing and devising a new headphone play titled Project Black Plague.
