She is known for her innovative productions, which often tackle challenging and thought-provoking subject matter. Born in 1945 in Lakewood, New Jersey, Roth grew up in a family that was deeply involved in the arts. Her father was a musician and her mother was a painter, and they encouraged their daughter to pursue her own creative interests. She intended to remain in the field of production design until she met Irene Sharaff at the Bucks County Playhouse.
