Enter a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur, and glory! A world where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment. Pop the champagne and prepare for the spectacular (spectacular.)
After dazzling audiences since its Broadway debut in 2019, the party continues at Moulin Rouge!. Based on Baz Luhrmann’s beloved 2001 film, this Tony-winning show is a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom, and—above all—love.
What’s the show about? Set in the bohemian Paris of 1899, Moulin Rouge! follows the passionate and doomed romance between Christian, a young writer, and Satine, the star performer of the Moulin Rouge. With stakes raised by financial peril and a menacing duke’s demands, their love story unfolds against the backdrop of a glittering cabaret, where every moment pulses with energy, drama, and spectacle.
Featuring an eclectic jukebox score, Moulin Rouge! reinvents more than 70 pop hits into show-stopping medleys and heartfelt ballads, including “Lady Marmalade,” “Your Song,” and “El Tango de Roxanne.” Under the direction of Alex Timbers, the musical transforms the stage into a feast for the senses, filled with jaw-dropping choreography, opulent costumes, and dazzling set pieces.
Debuting on Broadway on July 25, 2019, the musical quickly became an audience favorite, earning 14 Tony nominations and winning 10, including Best Musical. Its original cast featured Aaron Tveit, Karen Olivo, and Danny Burstein, who also appear on the Grammy-winning cast album.
Productions have taken the world by storm, with critically acclaimed runs in London’s West End, Melbourne, and Tokyo. Touring productions across North America and Australia bring the spectacle to audiences far and wide, while plans for new stagings in Germany and South Korea show the show’s universal appeal.
Moulin Rouge! is more than a musical — it is a state of mind.
In 'Moulin Rouge,' life is beautiful, in a way reality never is. All is permitted, and forgiven, in the name of love. Bohemian poverty is exquisitely picturesque. Stardom is around the corner for the gifted and hungry. And even songs you thought you never wanted to hear again pulse with irresistible new sex appeal. What this emporium of impure temptations is really selling is pure escapism. You may not believe in it all by the next morning. But I swear you'll feel nothing like regret.
The show is A LOT, in every sense, both intoxicating and exhausting in its unrelenting visual and sonic assault. But it virtually defies you not to be entertained.
