Theatre 55 is excited to announce the opening of its 6th Season with Kander and Ebb’s CABARET, featuring internationally acclaimed singer Prudence Johnson as Sally Bowles, February 2–10, 2024, at Mixed Blood Theatre, 1501 South 4th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55454. “To perform a role like Sally Bowles at this point in my life (I just turned 71) is astonishing, thrilling, and a little terrifying. Sally is a complex character with some fabulous songs-- I’m loving the challenge of it all. Such a talented cast, and with Richard at the helm, it's going to be a great adventure.”, says Prudence Johnson. CABARET is set in 1929 Berlin as the Jazz Age is ending and the Nazi Party’s rise to power is beginning. Enter the Kit Kat Club, where all of your troubles are left at the door. The bawdy, yet seductive, Emcee (played by Rik Kutcher, who portrayed Tom Collins in Theatre 55’s RENT last year) lures you in with hit musical numbers including, “Willkommen”, “Cabaret”, “Don’t Tell Mama”, “Two Ladies”, “Maybe This Time”, and many more! Theatre 55 continues its work of reinterpreting musical works through the lens of age and aging with this CABARET and a cast of actors 55 and up. If you saw RENT, ROCKY HORROR, or HAIR, you know how very powerful—and fun—this will be! “This story resonates as strongly today as it did in 1966; especially during this election year, and specifically for the 55+ community.”, says Richard Hitchler, Director. Theatre 55 was formed with the purpose of developing lifelong learning through theatre performance and education. Our vision is to enrich the lives of elders as artists, audiences, and lifelong learners through theatrical performance and education. Theatre 55 aims to produce high-energy, impactful productions utilizing the senior artists of our community. We strive to engage with vibrant seniors living throughout the Twin Cities and beyond through classes, workshops, showcases, and performance. This mission plays out in this production with a cast of 18 dancers, singers, actors, and 6 orchestra members aged 55 - 76, who take this “dark marvel”, and turn it into a meaningful and thought-provoking musical with an emphasis on the impact of racism, sexism, homophobia, and ageism in society. Theatre 55 is committed to equitable access to its shows. While seating is not reserved, general seating tickets are priced at $20 and $35. Patrons have the opportunity to choose the amount that best fits their budget. Limited cabaret table seating is also available for $50. Tickets available at theatre55.org.
