Now an aspiring architect, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in the war. They've never met, but he has written to Rick saying that "you will always have somebody who will do anything for you"so he's delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. His delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact, who refuses to leave. His continued presence leads from one uproarious incident to another, forcing Willum to make some life-changing and life-affirming decisions and finally take command of his life and future.
