NEWSIES the Broadway Musical is a musical based on the 1992 film NEWSIES,which in turn was inspired by the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. The show has music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The musical premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011 and made its Broadway debut in 2012. Newsies is loosely based on the true story of Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. Thousands of homeless and orphaned children who were selling newspapers to make money to buy food are living in newsboys' lodging houses, including 17-year old Manhattan newsboy Jack "Cowboy" Kelly , who is a regular newsboy selling newspapers for Joseph Pulitzer and his paper, the New York World. He is joined by a ragtag team of newsboys. When the prices of papes are hiked and the newsies are hung outto dry, there is nothing left to do but open the gates and seize the day! Led by charismatic Jack and independent, young newspaper reporter Katherine Plumber, the newsies form a union andorganize a strike against the greedy publisher of the New York World. Can a group of idealistic newsboys win against a foe as powerful as acclaimed publisher Joseph Pulitzer?
