Look Back in Anger - West End History , Info & More

Almeida Theatre
Almeida St, The Angel, London N1 1TA, United Kingdom London

Jimmy Porter is frustrated by his post-war life running a local stall. Embittered by the disapproval of his wife Alison’s wealthier family and a world that has shut him out, he

frequently spirals into fits of rage.

One night, when Alison’s friend unexpectedly turns up at their home, this uneasy marriage descends further into freefall, with their friends left trying to keep the peace.

Former Almeida Resident Director Atri Banerjee (The Glass Menagerie) directs Billy Howle (The Perfect Couple) and Ellora Torchia (Midsommar) in a new production of John Osborne’s ground-breaking, furious play which, alongside Arnold Wesker’s Roots, changed British theatre forever. Now the mirror they held up to 1950s society is angled towards 2024, with the two plays running alongside each other in repertory for 11 weeks, as part of the Almeida’s Angry and Young season.

L.A. Theatre Works To Record and Stream LOOK BACK IN ANGER, 3/15-18
by Harmony Wheeler - Mar 5, 2012

Look Back in Anger - In John Osborne's classic drama. Jimmy Porter barely ekes out a living running a candy stall by day and playing jazz trumpet by night. Although he usually takes his frustrations out on his emotionless wife, Jimmy's scathing tongue and self-loathing seem destined to destroy everything. Still as shocking and relevant as when it first premiered in post-war London, Look Back in Anger is a sharply funny, fiercely honest exploration of political disillusionment and basic human yearning. All performances will be recorded to air on L.A. Theatre Works' syndicated radio theater series, which broadcasts weekly on public radio stations nationwide and can be streamed on demand at www.latw.org.

From the Artistic Director: Look Back in Anger
by Roundabout Theatre Company - Jan 12, 2012

Look Back in Anger holds a rather important place in theatre history. First produced in 1956, this drama created an uproar with its look into the cramped apartment of Jimmy Porter and his wife Alison, revealing the seething emotions simmering just below the surface of a new class of young British men and women.
