Three generations of women in one British Asian family will have their extraordinary story told on stage in Coventry this spring in a powerful new play by Yellow Earth Theatre and Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester. Adapted from the bestselling memoir by Helen Tse, Mountains: The Dreams of Lily Kwok charts a multisensory journey from Hong Kong to Manchester, unfolding the remarkable history behind the founding of the famous Sweet Mandarin restaurant.

The Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC), a nonprofit cultural arts center and one of the most successful suburban film houses in the country, is celebrating a decade of their popular Jazz Sessions.  The 10th annual series will kick off on May 2nd with an opening night event featuring World-renowned guitarist and singer, John Pizzarelliperforming a musical tribute to Antônio Carlos Jobim, followed by four more live performances that will introduce guests to some of the exciting young innovators who carry on the jazz legacy and continue to reinvent the form today.  The performances will take place after a screening of The House of Tom—Mundo, Monde, Mondo - a captivating documentary on Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, best known in the US for creating the 1960s bossa nova craze with tunes like “The Girl from Ipanema.”

The Ringling announces a new vision for its acclaimed Art of Performance programming. As an integral part of the Art of Our Time initiative, it fosters the creation of genre-bending works based on experimentation and collaboration.

Broadway Dreams demonstrated the unifying power of the arts when the internationally renowned performing arts education program sent nine Broadway professionals to Moscow, Russia for the third consecutive year. Through a landmark partnership created between the non-profit organization, the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Department of State, and Moscow Broadway, Broadway Dreams offered their unique brand of Broadway master classes to 81 Russian performers of all ages during a ten-day intensive program. The collaboration culminates in three public performances at the Lyudmila Ryumina Concert Hall, Monday, April 23 and Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

Not much is similar to these two pieces, but I find it fascinating that both pieces approach theatre and the performing space not in a sense of showcasing performances but embedding the performances by the performers as part of the piece to make illusions.
