Following its sold out run at the Kiln Theatre, Ryan Calais Cameron's 'electrifying' (Evening Standard) Retrograde comes to the Apollo Theatre for a strictly limited run.

Ten years before he becomes the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Actor, this gripping drama captures the moment a young Sidney Poitier prepares to sign a career-defining Hollywood contract that could make him a star. But there’s a catch. Will he put his career before his principles? In a time of betrayals, will he name names? Will he sign his life away?

Inspired by real events, this 'exceptional' (The Guardian) play directed by the Kiln Theatre's Artistic Director Amit Sharma, features Ivanno Jeremiah (Constellations) reprising his 'tremendous' (Time Out) performance as Sidney Poitier, opposite Stanley

Townsend (Netflix's Kaos) and Oliver Johnstone (Antigone).

Retrograde follows Ryan's smash hit 'modern masterpiece' (The Sunday Times) For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy - so good it sold out twice - cementing his place as 'one of theatre’s most thrilling voices' (Independent).

Says Bob, “'Mar Vista' for me is kind of a throwback to the old Buffalo Springfield records and their eclectic unpredictable nature. 'Forward & Backworks' is a concept for orchestra that includes two pieces also found on 'Mar Vista.'”

Shall We Dance and Think About Privilege and Race? THE KING AND I at Toby's
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jan 24, 2012

Rodgers and Hammerstein designed the ending to reduce you to tears, and they knew what they were doing. Resist, even at this excellent revival, and think about the conundrums of race, class and gender that that lie just beneath the surface.

BWW Reviews: Until Someone Gets Hurt - THE WILD PARTY at Teatro101
by Jack L. B. Gohn - May 23, 2011

I'm reminded of the old joke: It's only funny till someone gets hurt; then it's hilarious. Jacobean audiences liked the stage littered with corpses at the end; we settle for one or two corpses and people's lives shattered. And that this show certainly delivers. There may not be much depth to it, much in the way of a philosophical point, but it's absorbing to see.
