Review: NATIONAL BUNRAKU THEATER AT THE KENNEDY CENTER at The Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater
by Emily Berger - Oct 10, 2024
Confounding at times and also beautiful, this traditional puppetry company is wrapping us a US tour. Yes, orchestras may downsize from 30 violins to 25, but it still takes all 25 roughly forty minutes to play Beethoven’s sixth symphony. You could speed up the tempo, increasing “output” with the same number of performers (the orchestra could play it twice in an hour instead of 1.5 times!) but no audience pays to listen to it twice in a row nor wants to hear it played vivace.
Review: San Diego Symphony Presents A Concert Of Works By Mahler And Larcher
by Ron Bierman - Oct 10, 2024
What did our critic think of SAN DIEGO SYMPHONY PERFORM WORKS BY MAHLER AND LARCHER at the Jacobs Music Center?
There were only two pieces on the San Diego Symphony’s program for the second weekend of the new season, the first after the renovation of the Jacobs Music Center. But one of them was Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, Resurrection. At about 90 minutes, it is one of the longest ever written.
In an exciting performance such as conductor Rafael Payare led, no one was nodding off, or even tempted to glance at a phone. Though a phone did elude its owner for three muffled rings before the transgressing audience member got it out where it managed one last defiantly louder, but futile ring before stifled.

Review: JUNO AND THE PAYCOCK, Gielgud Theatre
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Oct 7, 2024
A cost of living crisis, people being fit to work but choosing not to, poverty, nationalism and women's control of their own bodies. Seán O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock may have first been performed at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1924, but a century later, his tragicomedy resonates more strongly than ever.

Review: THE CABINET MINISTER, Menier Chocolate Factory
by Cindy Marcolina - Sep 28, 2024
Sir Julian Twombley is in hot water when it’s discovered that his family has been living way beyond his House of Commons’ wages. This isn’t the latest front page of a Daily Mail-made political attack, it’s the premise of one of Arthur Wing Pinero’s later comedies. Though Victorian farce isn’t exactly all the rage at the moment, The Cabinet Minister is so unfortunately relevant and timely you’d never think it was written in 1890.
