BIO
In a career spanning 50 years, De Shields has distinguished himself as an unparalleled actor, director, and educator. He has intermittently portrayed Hermes in Hadestown since 2012, including the recent critically acclaimed production at London's National Theatre. In 2018, De Shields was the recipient of the 8th Annual Off-Broadway Alliance Legend Award and the 33rd Annual Bob Harrington Life Achievement Bistro Award. Among his other accolades are the 2009 National Black Theatre Festival's Living Legend Award, and the 2007 Village Voice Obie Award for Sustained Excellence of Performance. A multiple Tony Award nominee, he is best known for his show-stopping performances in four legendary Broadway productions: The Wiz, Ain't Misbehavin' (Emmy Award), Play On!, and The Full Monty. De Shields is a proud member of AEA, SAG-AFTRA, and SDC.

The York Theatre Company, dedicated to the development of new musicals and preserving musical gems from the past, recently honored Tony Award winner André De Shields (Hadestown) with the 2019 Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement in Musical Theatre and producer Riki Kane Larimer (Cagney) with The York Theatre Company Founders' Award on Monday evening, November 11, 2019 at The Edison Ballroom (240 West 47th Street).

But however unplanned the pregnancy was, nothing could be less expected than the chain of events it would set in motion. Robert O'Hara's audacious, hilarious allegory envisions an uncannily familiar future one long after women have gone extinct from centuries of mistreatment where man's capacity to f**k everything up soars to new heights.

Several original cast members from the iconic Broadway premiere production of THE WIZ convened last night in honor of the show's 40th anniversary in a series of special performances. Phylicia Rashad, Andre De Shields, Dee Dee Bridgewater and more will joined to celebrate the musical in Central Park and Marcus Garvey Park with a series of special outdoor celebrations featuring song, story and dance titled THE WIZ: A CELEBRATION IN DANCE & MUSIC. With a book by Itamar Moses, music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, and conceived and directed by Daniel Aukin, THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE will run through Sunday, November 2, with an official press opening on Wednesday, October 22. This season's Off-Broadway line-up includes: the U.S. Premiere of Howard Barker's Victory: Choices in Reaction, starring four-time Tony Award nominee and Drama Desk Award-winner Jan Maxwell in her 4th collaboration with PTP, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director and NYIT Award nominee Richard Romagnoli (American Associate of The Wrestling School); the U.S. Premiere of Steven Dykes' Territories, two stories of politics and desire, The Spoils and a light gathering of dust, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Cheryl Faraone; and a revival of Neal Bell's Spatter Pattern: or, How I Got Away With It, directed by PTP's Co-Artistic Director Jim Petosa.

Engeman Theater production of Damn Yankees, came out to support his ARCHBISHOP SUPREME TARTUFFE director Alfred Preisser and choreographer Tracy Jack at the West End Theater in New York last night, where the Dog Run Rep world premiere of Jeff Cohen's The Man Who Ate Michael Rockefeller, directed by Mr. Preisser and choreographed by and featuring Ms. Jack, is currently playing a limited engagement through October 3. After the show, castmembers were delighted to meet the Broadway vet.
