Rexy is Canadian history as current as any debate in the House of Commons but a great deal wittier. The play follows Canada’s longest serving and most eccentric Prime Minister, William Lyon Mackenzie King, from the beginning to the end of the Second World War and features a panorama of world leaders, power brokers, a future Prime Minister, a socialite crystal ball reader and the cliché of a prostitute with a heart of gold.
King is a brilliantly cunning politician, driven by a sense of destiny, his own and that of Canada, who strove to secure a place on the world stage often by seeking the help and advice of departed souls especially his mother and grandfather.
In Rexy, we see King not only as the politician but also as the man, deeply religious, vain, full of self-doubt, a spiritualist, and a lifelong bachelor who sought the companionship of other men’s wives and of ladies of the night.
