Canadian-born and Netherlands-based choreographer André Gingras, now Artistic Director of Dance Works Rotterdam, marks his return to the NAC with Anatomica, an explosive series of works about the objectification of the human body on display. Combining Gingras’s high-octane partnering with athletic energy, Anatomica owes as much to the world of gymnastics as it does to contemporary dance. Dancers leap, tumble and fall from great heights — their primal movements centred on courtship ritual and sexual desire. Performed to two distinct percussive scores by long-time collaborators Joseph Hyde and Jurgen De Blonde, Anatomica is organized chaos at its most gripping and exhilarating.
