A sell-out across the fringe festival circuit, The Stakeout is a comedy/drama about two men on a stakeout of two men on a stakeout of them. Uniquely fresh, funny, and fearless. A head trip about fathers & sons that keeps one guessing until the very end. “5 STARS: Comedy & drama, magic & wonder in one of the best performances of the year” -Edmonton Journal. “Biting humor and remarkably poignant.” -Calgary Herald. “4.5 STARS: A phenomenal story told with impeccable cadence” -Winnipeg Free Press. “The Stakeout is a whip-smart tragicomedy with crackling dialogue.” -Apt613, Ottawa. Winner: Best of Fest, Ottawa Fringe.
Sitting in a van, two FBI agents conduct a stakeout of another van, one in which they bear witness to a high-stakes moment between a father and son. It’s a moment that exactly mirrors their own personal histories, and which they decide to incorporate into their cover story. The questions, though, of what’s real and of who’s surveilling whom become evermore uncertain as they grow closer to busting the van’s production of a new street drug called Empathy, a narcotic that makes its users see everything from everyone else’s point of view.
Out of hundreds of productions, The Stakeout was chosen for the SoHo Playhouse’s 2022 Fringe Encore series, representing the very best of fringe theater worldwide. Playwright Martin Dockery has won over 50 festival awards over his 15 years of touring.
