Once Upon a Mattress at bergen county academies

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Bergen County Academies Hackensack campus will be performing "Once Upon a Mattress" as this year's annual winter musical held on Thursday February 28, March 1st and March 2nd in the school's newly renovated 1200 seat auditorium.The production includes concession sales before and during intermission, with a portion of the proceeds earmarked for a high school in Kentucky in need of props and theater materials.Specifically, the money raised will help fund a project at Woodford County high school in Versailles, Kentucky. Woodford County High's theater teacher and creator of the project, Mr.Tonks, "My students crave exciting, creative, cutting-edge theatre experiences. I want to provide opportunities that don't seem run of the mill--rather I have a great number of students who are "teetering on the fence" when it comes to the arts, in general, and theatre/drama, specifically. These students are certainly creative but, lack the kind of options and opportunities found in other arts programs around the country."Co-president of "Parents and Patrons of the Arts" at BCA, Vicky Green, "The students of the performing arts academy here at BCA have access to everything they need to prepare them for pursuing a college major in the arts should they choose to. The excellence in training provided by their teachers is matched by the tools they have access to at the school. It seemed to us that Mr.Tonks has the same passion but lacks the necessary materials. Helping fund their project felt like a nice way to give back from one highschool theater community to another across the country.Besides a percentage of the concession sales, the teens have included a QR code that will be posted in the box office to scan where further donations can be made.Opening night curtain is at 6:30 p.m., Thursday February 28th.
