In the spring of 1829, the great American writer Washington Irving, visited Spain. His travels took him to the Alhambra. An unparalleled work of architecture from the glorious days of Islamic Al-Andalus, the Alhambra in the early 19th century was a derelict structure, virtually in ruins, home to thieves, beggars, vagabonds, and covered with the graffiti of travelers. Irving’s subsequent articles on the need to preserve the Alhambra, and his book, Tales of The Alhambra, filled with notes of his travels in Andalusia, as well as legends and folktales from the region, awakened the European conscience that this incredible piece of Spanish history must be recovered. It sparked the restoration and preservation of this magnificent palace. Thus was the Alhambra saved.

Mosaic Dance Theater Company (MDTC) brings Washington Irving’s words to life in Impressions of The Alhambra, Through excerpts of selected passages and adaptations of legends from his book, this vibrant new work transports you to Spain, as experienced by Irving on his travels. Relish his exquisite use of descriptive language through spoken word, while seeing his impressions expressed in dance. The legends of the Alhambra’s lore come alive through MDTC’s captivating style of dance/story theater.  A bounty of projections of historical paintings set the scene and carry you to a different world – the world of the Alhambra!

Adapted and directed by MDTC’s Producing Artistic Director Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, Impressions of The Alhambra features a cast of ten. Choreographer Samara Adell, MDTC’s Artistic Director for Dance, and Guest Choreographer Carlos Fittante, also Artistic Director of the BALAM Dance Theatre, based in New York City, have created new works in Middle Eastern dance, Spanish escuela bolera, Baroque, fusion, and interpretive styles.

Mosaic Dance Theater Company is dedicated to the dance and folkloric traditions of the Mediterranean region. The Company’s original dance, theater, and educational programs celebrate the rich diversity of cultures of the lands of North Africa, the Middle East, and southern Europe. The dances and music, the stories and myths, and the history and legends of this fascinating area form the wellspring of inspiration for MDTC’s creative vision.  Founded in 2003 by Producing Artistic Director Morgiana Celeste Varricchio, this critically acclaimed company is known for its artistry and authenticity, not only in creating the original works that comprise its repertory, but also in faithfully researching their origins to ensure cultural integrity.  Touring nationally to performing arts venues, universities, schools, and community institutions, the Company is the recipient of the Sunshine Award for its contribution to the performing arts, recognized by NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) and the United Nations.
