Characters - all roles are physical and require versatility, endurance and focus. Fast costume/character changes and manipulation of props and set pieces are a requirement of the play. There needs to be a strong sense of ensemble between all 4 actors. Dialects can be developed through the rehearsal process—just come to auditions with a sense of uninhibited ‘willingness to try’.
Richard Hannay—A spy thriller hero; daring, resourceful, innocent, charming and charismatic. The role requires endurance and excellent comic timing. Must have or be able to develop a standard British dialect.
Woman—This is the only scripted female role in the show. The role calls for multiple dialects including German spy, naive lower-class Scottish farmer’s wife, and upper class, British, romantic lead of the show. Must have a strong sense of comic timing and great versatility.
Clown 1 and Clown 2—the word “clown” for this show is used to describe 2 actors who possess the ability to change quickly (often on stage and with a simple switch
of hats) and portray dozens of different roles between them. They play men, women, old, young, comic buffoons, deadly spies, pompous fools, geniuses, a Cockney milkman, salesmen, politicians, a Scottish farmer, innkeepers, landladies, a corrupt sheriff, a traitorous professor and more.
