THEATRE HARRISBURG ANNOUNCES AUDITIONS FOR
SONDHEIM CLASSIC “SWEENEY TODD”
Theatre Harrisburg has announced auditions for its production of the classic Stephen Sondheim
musical SWEENEY TODD. Directed by the Theatre’s Artistic Director Emeritus Thomas
Hostetter, the show will run April 25 – May 11, 2014 at Whitaker Center.
Auditions for SWEENEY TODD are scheduled for Saturday, December 14 and Sunday,
December 15 at the Krevsky Production Center. In a departure from Theatre Harrisburg’s
normal audition process, Saturday’s open call is for women only from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and men
only from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Call-backs will be on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Character

SWEENEY TODD requires a longer than usual rehearsal period due to the difficulties of the
musical score. Therefore, music rehearsals, under the direction of the show’s music director
Richard Fowler, will begin in early January, first at twice a week and later increasing to three
times a week. Not all cast members will be required for all music rehearsals. Staging rehearsals
begin March 2.
SWEENEY TODD is Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece. Set in 19th
is the tale of Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd, who returns to London after 15 years of exile
and imprisonment. He vows revenge, first on the judge who sentenced him, and later on the
whole world. Joining forces with piemaker Mrs. Lovett, he opens a barbershop in which he slits
the throats of customers and has them baked into meat pies. The winner of eight Tony Awards,
the recent popular film adaptation starred Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
