Auditions: Monday and Tuesday evenings, April 23 and 24, at the theater building, 702 W. Ewing, beginning at 6:00 PM. This delightful romantic comedy about working colleagues who unwittingly fall in love through a blind correspondence has been adapted in many ways over the years. The original stage play served as the basis for the classic 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner, starring Jimmy Stuart and Margaret Sullivan as well as the Judy Garland screen musical, In the Good Old Summertime. Most recently, it was served up again as the 1989 Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film, You’ve Got Mail.
There are principal roles for 5 men and 2 women, as well as a mixed chorus of supporting players. Bring a prepared Broadway-style song with sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. There will also be cold readings from the libretto.
Rehearsals will take place at the theater building beginning in late May. Nine performances are scheduled from July 13-29, 2012. Directed by Andrew Ford Musical Direction by Charlie Parker Characters Amalia Balash - 25-35 Vivacious, slightly nervous shop girl, bold enough to post a lonely-hearts ad but still unsure of her prospects. Ilona Ritter - 30-ish Sensible but sexy co-worker who’s being strung along by Mr. Kodaly. Amalia’s loyal friend, she gives the impression she’s been around. Georg Nowack - 25-40 Veteran manager of Maraczek’s Parfumerie. Soft-spoken, personable, shy, capable; romantic pen-pal with Amalia. Steven Kodaly - 25-40 Jaunty ladies-man, handsome, dapper and shallow. Ladislav Sipos - 45-50 Senior clerk at Maraczek’s. A wise and practical man, a bit obsequious to superiors to keep his place secure. Arpad Lazlo - 15-16 Maraczek’s bicycle-riding delivery boy. A good kid; sincere, ambitious and indefatigable.
