Don Giovanni, updated as a celebration of Spanish sic-kitsch set in the '90s, replete with air couches, Chanel clothes, lots of jewels and a bright white stage made of tiles with bulls, this production is a dedication to Spanish cinematographer Pedro Almodóvar and Cuban Bolero singer La Lupe. On the stage will be five neon bull sculptures, a five-piece couch covered with Piet Mondrian fabric, and lots of gazpacho. The performers will be driven by their most inner desires and fears, living their lives in a continuous state of suspension. A suspension of time...a suspension of senses...in a '90s Spain where food, sex and pop culture are modes of expression. Director Stefanos Koroneos is the General and Artistic Director of the Teatro Grattacieo. He brings with him the experience of having worked with some of the most distinguished directors and opera directors, including Franco Zeffirelli, Fabrizio Melano, Moisés Kaufman and Richard Bonynge. In 2021 he directed Mozart's Idomeneo in Heraklion, Greece, followed by Mascagni's L'amico Fritz for the Phoenicia Festival of the Voice. In 2022 he is directing a new production of Don Giovanni at the Apollon Theater in Syros, Phoenicia Festival of the Voice and Rhodes International Festival, and Giulietta e Romeo by Zandonai for Teatro Grattacielo in Battery Park City, New York. The performance will also feature Maestro Jason Tramm leading the Light Opera of New Jersey Chamber Orchestra.
