Phantom Chorus Theatre (PCT) debuts their latest show “Trippy Triptych,

Vol I: Blacklight”. This is the first volume of a recurring series: “Volume I” will be performed entirely in blacklight, full of glowing neon puppets, masks, props and costumes. This collection of three different original one-act plays each tell a self-contained story. Performances will run from Nov. 3rd – 18th, 2023 at the Bryant Lake Bowl and Theater, at 7pm on Fridays and 3pm on Saturdays. The show is 90 minutes long with no intermission.

The first section is a psychedelic, electronica musical titled “The Center of Everything”, written and directed by Thalia Kostman. It tells the story of a distant world populated by peaceful little creatures, who are under the threat of a hungry monster devouring everything in sight. A prophecy says they must awaken a sleeping titan in their planet’s core to save them. “This piece uses physical theatre techniques to create a world of magical shapes and movement, like in our past productions Bellerophon’s Shadow and Chroma, but this time the illusions will be even stronger thanks to the blacklight effect,” says Thalia Kostman. “The Center of Everything” will feature original music by Thalia and Keith Kostman, and fight choreography by Dylan Kostman.

The middle section is a comedic tale titled “The Button”, directed by Kristina Jansons and written by Marc Berg and Thalia Kostman. It follows a puppet whose everyday breakfast routine is interrupted by an unexpected delivery, which quickly turns their quiet morning into a madcap, surreal farce. “It’s the Muppets meets the Twilight Zone,” says Kristina Jansons, “Each scene becomes more bizarre than the last, and a strict routine diminishes into utter chaos. I’m looking forward to many laughs on and off stage as our Phantoms enter full play-mode!” An entirely wordless piece, “The Button” will focus on using physical comedy and cartoony visuals to tell its story, and features original music by Steven Zubich.

The third and final section is a dark fable titled “The Alchemist’s Bargain”, written and directed by Marc Berg. Written entirely in poetic verse, it tells the story of an unnamed Hero traveling to a mysterious and powerful Alchemist to revive their deceased love. The Hero must seek out three ingredients to complete the spell – a task easier said than done. “I’ve always been inspired by visionaries of fantastical and macabre works of puppetry, film, and animation...Guillermo Del Toro, Toby Froud, Henry Selick to name a few. Their influence permeates just about everything I do, and this piece is certainly no exception. What can I say? I’ll always be a creepy kid at heart. I can’t help myself,” says Marc Berg. “The Alchemist’s Bargain” features original music by Steven Zubich.
