George meets Doris in a California restaurant in 1951 and they have an affair. While happily married to other people and despite six children between them, they agree to meet at an inn once each year. Over 25 years they develop a deep emotional connection. George is a guilt-ridden, neurotic accountant, stuffy and rich. Giving it up, he goes into analysis, joins therapy, becomes a latter-day hippie and finally returns to the establishment. Doris starts as an awkward girl, yet becomes a progressively restless housewife, a college student returnee, over-aged flower child, career woman and, finally, settled matron. Their changes, however, never synchronize making for a poignant drama as well as hilarious comedy.
