"There was a cabaret, and there was a master of ceremonies... and there was a city called Berlin, in a country called Germany...and it was the end of the world." And so ends the masterpiece of musical theatre that is "Cabaret." Owing to the success of the Bob Fosse film and the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall Broadway revival, many people are unaware of the original version of Cabaret and might steer clear of it for fear it might be offensive. And that is one of the reasons we have chosen to present it at PBA. This truly is a revival. "Cabaret" as originally envisioned is not overly sexualized, it is not heavy-handed, it is not obscene. And because it is none of these things, it is even more terrifying. Ah, yes…“life is a cabaret, old chum, come to the cabaret.”
