The Merry Wives of Windsor is a lesser-known Shakespeare comedy. It is raucous, farcical, and full of down-to-earth fun. Perhaps that’s why it seldom makes the reading list.
But it features one of the most loved Shakespeare characters: Falstaff, the down-on-his luck, boastful but cowardly over-weight knight, who first appeared in the Bard’s history plays on Henry IV. Queen Elizabeth I enjoyed him, and Shortlist magazine lists him amongst the 40 coolest characters in literature.
