Mount Wilson Observatory—the scientific marvel above Pasadena, atop Mount Wilson—is pleased to announce the Adams Pack Station Fundraiser, featuring two concerts by the talented Mariachi Lindas Mexicanas, LA's all female international mariachi group, to take place on Sunday, October 30, 2022. The performances will be presented inside the iconic vaulted dome of the 100-inch telescope. Adams Pack Station owner Maggie Moran, who worked at the observatory before purchasing the pack station in 2019, has been given the opportunity to hold this fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds going to the historic donkey pack station to help it hold on while it continues to be closed due to the Bobcat Fire of September 2020. It will be an event to remember, rich in culture, tradition, and surrounded by the natural beauty of Mount Wilson Observatories’ grounds—the program will be offered twice: first in a 3:00pm performance and again at 5:00pm. Led by director Maricela Martinez, Mariachi Lindas Mexicanas’s traditional and extensive repertoire of mariachi music will be on full display. Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) will be celebrated with an ofrenda (offering) to honor those from the Mount Wilson Observatory, as well as the Adams Pack Station, who have passed on and have left their mark both on history and these two great Southern California institutions. Ticket holders are invited to enjoy a reception from 4:00-5:00pm, which will include Mexican-style hors d'oeuvres and assorted beverages. With a deep history as a donkey pack station, information center, and event venue, the Adams Pack Station, built in 1936, was tragically affected by the devastation of the 2020 Bobcat Fire, which forced the station to stop operating as a business. 100% of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the pack station, which has been a truly integral part of the hiking culture and outdoor recreation at the Chantry Flat, located inside the Big Santa Anita Canyon in the foothills above Sierra Madre and Arcadia, California. The Adams Pack Station is just 12 miles northeast of Old Town Pasadena.
The Adams Pack Station also served as a community center for the nearby residents of the 81 historic cabins located on land rented from the U.S. Forest Service. The final pack station standing in Southern California, the Adams Pack Station housed nine donkeys who undertook trips twice a week to transport supplies to both the cabins and Sturtevant Camp, which can only be accessed through narrow trails on foot.
