Lawrence Opera Theatre is thrilled to share its fourteenth season with the Lawrence community! Opera is fundamentally a genre of emotional storytelling. It speaks to the core of the human condition and our shared experiences as emotive beings. The intersection of voice, music, and theatre makes opera so perfect at telling humanity’s most universal stories through an intimately emotional lens. Passionate and tuneful, Georges Bizet’s Carmen is a perfect example of such story telling. Lawrence Opera Theatre lives by the saying, “If music be the food of love, play on” (Shakespeare). Our mission is to fill the void of opera during the summer season in the Lawrence and surrounding areas. We believe in the power of text, music, and great art in opera and musical theatre. Lawrence Opera Theatre exists to provide a broad spectrum of music, drama and cultural service to Lawrence, Douglas County, and the entire state of Kansas. We also provide a venue to singing professionals, emerging vocal artists, and community singers to perform and gain experience. Carmen will be August 18 at 7:30 and August 20 at 2:30; tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and will be staged at Theatre Lawrence. Opera Scenes and Arias (including Gallantry) will be August 17 at 7:30 and Everything Disney will be August 19 at 7:30; tickets for both are $20 for adults and $10 for students. Canto Italiano (including Cece) will be August 12 at 7:30, at 23rd Street Brewery. Check out our Facebook page for the most up to date information and announcements! We look forward to sharing our love of music with the Lawrence community!
We are celebrating our 14th season by highlighting the human condition. This includes our now popular Opera in the Box performance entitled, Canto Italiano: Art Song by the lesser Italian Masters which includes the United States and Company Debut of “Cecé” by composer Raffaele Cipriano.
Also included in the season at Theatre Lawrence is a major opera scenes and aria program from some of the most well-known operas, as well as featuring Benjamin Moore’s Gallantry. LOT’s traditional rollicking evening of our musical theatre Cabaret which is called Everything Disney.
