OLA! Makali`i, 20 year concert celebration honors people from all walks of life who came together to instigate the re-birth of the practice, functionality, and traditions of Holo Moana. Birthed through the portal of Lononui?kea, Makali`i the double-hulled voyaging canoe born here in Waimea, presents a platform for community to practice their traditional lifestyles in a synergetic way. Over the past 20 years, Makali`i has served as a floating classroom, engaging the community of all ages to delve into the traditions of culture from the deck of a canoe.
Headlining this celebration is a child reared in the essense of Lononui?kea. Kaumakaiwa Kanaka`ole is the eldsest child of Kekuhi Keali`ikanaka`oleohaililani and the the eldest grand child of Pua Kanaka`ole Kanahele. A five-time winner of the N? H?k? Hanohano awards, Kaumakaiwa?s voice personifies depth and wisdom of family, environment and ancient spirit, while sparking a cadence and standard for the next generation of native Hawaiian musicians today.
