Hawaii’s premier dance ensemble celebrates their 25th anniversary with the World Premiere of DOMINION – a startling and moving original work by IONA Artistic Director Cheryl Flaharty. Through dance, spoken word, and multi-media imagery, Dominion delves into the relationship between humans and animals, the food industry, and the rapidly growing extinction of animals. Vibrant contemporary dance pieces detail our playful relationships with domesticated animals and the need for stewardship of wild animals, while fresh produce literally tossed on stage, examines our growing interest in sustainable agriculture.
Notorious for their amazing visual imagery, IONA is taking Dominion a step further with the aid of elaborate LED video screens, digital animations, and interactive GoPro cinema between the performers and audience members. The production features a life-size cage for acrobatics, a seven-foot elephant tusk (reproduction), and other stunning theatrical elements.
IONA’s first new work in six years is well worth the wait! Dominion draws aside the veil of perception, delicately yet provocatively, teasing us to see more, to know more deeply.
