Please prepare 16-32 bars of your own song in the style of or from the show. An accompanist will be provided. Also prepare SIDE ONE and prepare A Perfectly Lovely Surprise Measure 105 to the end. MURDER FOR TWO

SEEKING:


MARCUS - Singer/skilled pianist, 25 to 40 years old, male, any ethnicity. Adept at physical comedy. A young, eager aspiring detective on a murder case, he’s a sweet, by-the-book rule follower who’s nursing a broken heart. Advanced piano playing is a MUST.
THE SUSPECTS - Singer/skilled pianist, 25 to 45 years old, any gender or ethnicity. Adept at physical comedy. A chameleon, great at switching quickly between hilarious characters on a dime. Doubles as all the suspects in this murder mystery, including a faded southern belle, a bickering middle-aged couple (yes both of them!), a mysterious ballerina, a lonely psychiatrist, three different boys from the wrong side of the tracks, and our female love interest. Advanced piano playing is a MUST.

JANE AUSTEN: 36 (she/her) As a recently published female author in Regency-era England, she is ahead of her time. Witty, clever, and thoughtful with a touch of snarkiness. Will double as MRS. REYNOLDS (Darcy’s housekeeper). A3 to F#5.
CASSANDRA AUSTEN: 39 (she/her) Jane Austen’s sister. Protective and practical. Austen’s most trusted confidante. A3 to E5. Will double as: CHARLOTTE LUCAS – Elizabeth Bennet’s best friend. Modest, sensible, and intelligent.
MARY BENNET: 19 (she/her) As the middle child, Mary is the most overlooked and ignored of the Bennet sisters. A great reader and philosophizer. She enjoys playing the piano but is technical without musicality. Must move well. (NOTE: Actor is NOT required to play, keyboard in pit will double.)
MR. BENNET: Late 40s to early 50s (he/him) A country gentleman with an odd mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice. His principal enjoyments arise from the countryside and books. Overwhelmed by living in a house full of women. A2 to F#3.
MRS. BENNET: Mid to late 40s (she/her) A high-strung mother of five daughters. A fading beauty who loves to gossip. A2 to F#3. Will double as: LADY CATHERINE DE BOURGH - Late 40s to early 50s (she/her) Darcy’s aunt and Mr. Collins’s patroness. Authoritative and self-important with striking features.
JANE BENNET: 22 (she/her) The Bennet’s eldest daughter, extremely beautiful both inside and out. A kind and gentle soul. Must move well. A3 to E5.
ELIZABETH BENNET: 20 (she/her) Jane Austen’s most famous heroine. Good-humored with a quick wit. She loves books and the outdoors. A non-traditional beauty. She plays the pianoforte with feeling, but not with particular skill. (NOTE: Actor is NOT required to play, keyboard in pit will double.) Must move well. A3 to G5.
CATHERINE “KITTY” BENNET: 17 (she/her) Silly and fretful. Suffers from allergies. Sidekick to her younger sister Lydia. Must move well. A3 to E5. Will double as: GEORGIANA DARCY: 16 (she/her) Darcy’s younger sister. Gentle, graceful, and sweet-natured.
LYDIA BENNET: 15 (she/her) The Bennet’s youngest daughter. She loves to laugh and to gossip. Also self-willed and careless. Maturing faster than her family would like. Strong dance skills A3 to A-flat5.
FITZWILLIAM DARCY: 28 (he/him) Jane Austen’s most famous hero. An extremely wealthy bachelor, which makes him particularly attractive. He is snobby and shy but is also kind and generous to those he is responsible for. A2 to G#4.
CHARLES BINGLEY: 22 (he/him) A wealthy bachelor; easy going and friendly. Darcy’s best friend. E-flat3 to A4.
CAROLINE BINGLEY: Mid-20s (she/her) Bingley’s sister. Fashionable, conceited, and proud. She has her sights set on marrying Darcy. An accomplished pianist. (NOTE: Actor is NOT required to play, keyboard in pit will double.) Must move well. A3 to G5. Will double as: MRS. GARDINER: Mid-40s (she/her) Mr. Gardiner’s elegant and amiable wife who “has a particular regard for Elizabeth.”
GEORGE WICKHAM: 28 (he/him) Grew up with Darcy, though now estranged. A handsome and personable soldier which causes women to be easily attracted to him. He has a striking resemblance to Tom Lefroy. Strong dance skills A2 to G4. Will double as: TOM LEFROY: 28 (he/him) A charismatic Irishman. Law student. 20-year-old Jane Austen’s beau, a love that ended in heartbreak. (Appears in a flashback ca. 1795.)
MR. COLLINS: 25 (he/him) A conceited clergyman intent on marrying one of the Bennet girls. Will double as: MR. GARDINER: Mid 50s (he/him) Mrs. Bennet’s friendly brother who “lives by trade in London.” Ensemble Singing only

CAROLE KING: Female identifying. An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good natured, unassuming, and often the peace maker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music. Piano playing ability strongly preferred. Ages: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: Eb3 to Eb5)
GERRY GOFFIN: Male identifying. Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner, and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded, and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. Ages: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: D3 to A4)
BARRY MANN: Male identifying. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable. Ages: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: C3 to A4)
CYNTHIA WEILL: Female identifying. A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likeable. Ages: 18 to 30 (Vocal range: G3 to E5)
DON KIRSCHNER: Male identifying. An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast-talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker. Ages: 40 to 60 (Vocal range: A2 to C#4)
GENIE KLEIN: Female identifying. Carole King's mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes. Age: 40 to 50.
