Photo Coverage: First look at The Ohio Educational Theatre Association's ONCE ON THIS ISLANDMarch 21, 2017Once on this Island is an adaptation of novelist Rosa Guy's My Love, My Love, which is in turn inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid. The annual All-Ohio Show is one of the most exciting projects that the Ohio EdTA offers to Thespians in Ohio. Thirty-eight students from nineteen different high schools around Ohio are featured in this production. The show rehearses over 3 long weekends before opening the State Thespian Conference. The All-Ohio show intends to provide participating students with the experience of working on an advanced level of theatrical production. Involvement in the All-Ohio show is a special honor for the participants and schools, as well as an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and meets a colorful array of characters. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show.

The evening included the presentation of the prestigious 'Harold' Awards, given for exception commitment to Central Ohio Theatre, production awards recognizing outstanding performers, directors, designers, and productions for the previous year, OSU's department of theatre presented the Phantom of the Theatre Award (yours truly was one of the recipients!) and last but certainly not least, the Central Ohio Theatre Critics' Circle presented their annual citations.

As the principle characters plot, scheme, conspire and counter-plot between each other, the deep-seated emotional ties between them get played out in the political arena, such that sibling rivalry and marital jealousy translate into civil war, treason and perhaps even murder among the members of a royal family.

That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!
