Founded in 1983 by famed violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin, the Menuhin Competition is the world’s leading international violin competition for players up to the age of 21. Held every two years in a different host city, the event combines a violin competition with a festival of concerts and events. In 2014, The University of Texas Butler School of Music hosts the first-ever competition in North America. Texas Performing Arts is proud to include the opening and gala performances of the Menuhin Competition as part of our 2013-2014 season.
The Menuhin Competition Austin 2014 kicks off its 10-day Festival with an opening concert featuring The University of Texas Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gerhardt Zimmermann. For this program, the UTSO, one of the top university orchestras in the nation, performs the Mendelssohn Double Concerto for Violin and Piano with violinist Ilya Gringolts and faculty pianist Anton Nel. Both soloists are serving as jurors for the competition.
